ROANOKE, Va. ( WFXR ) – The Food Allergy nonprofit, FARE Teal Pumpkin is promoting how children can be included with food allergies during the Halloween season.

1 in 3 children have potentially life-threatening food allergies, and the program encourages people to distribute non-food treatment options. Homeowners can also place a teal-colored pumpkin or sign at their door to let parents know they are giving out non-food treats.

There is also a Teal Pumpkin map , provided by FARE, so parents can plan a route for trick-or-treating.

Virginia ranks top 10 in best states for trick-or-treating

Zoom calls/video conferences are available with dates and times flexible for parents to learn more and interview Sung Poblete, PhD, RN, CEO of FARE; or Kelly Cleary, MD, Senior Director of Education & Support Programs.

    Topics will include the following:

    • What are the risks for children with food allergies at Halloween?
    • How can households participate in the teal pumpkin project?
    • What are some ideas for non-food treats?

CVS Pharmacy is a partner in the Teal Pumpkin Project marking its third year to provide non-food treats. Treats carried at CVS include light-up toys, glow sticks, games, and trick-or-treating supplies.
