Six people were displaced after a vehicle crashed through the bedroom wall of a Heidelberg Township home Sunday morning, just inches from where two occupants were sleeping, according to officials.

Firefighters were called to the scene on the 6700 block of York Road in Heidelberg Township around 2:21 a.m. on the morning of Sunday, Oct. 20, 2024, according to a release from Porters Volunteer Fire Company.

When emergency crews arrived, they found an overturned vehicle that had gone off the roadway, striking the roof and side of the home, and causing what the department described as "extensive damage."

All occupants were out of the home on the department's arrival, but the driver of the overturned vehicle had to be assisted out of the vehicle, the department said.

Two residents, a woman and her young daughter, were asleep in the room when the crash occurred, said Porters Volunteer Fire Company Chief Chris Walker. The pair escaped with only minor injuries, and were transported to a local hospital for evaluation, the department said.

In images released by the department, chunks of the wall are seen missing barely feet away from a bed in that bedroom, with piles insulation sitting overtop the bed.

A third occupant of the home drove themselves to the hospital several hours later, and was admitted for observation, the post said.

Walker told the Evening Sun that, as of Tuesday afternoon, all three occupants had been released from the hospital.

Six occupants of the home remain displaced, said Walker.

After the driver refused treatment by EMS crews, they were taken into custody by Northern York County Regional Police, the fire department said.

According to the police log of the Northern York County Regional Police department, the incident is being investigated as an alleged DUI.

Charges have yet to be filed as of Tuesday, Oct. 22.

The incident hit home for the small fire company based in Heidelberg Township, which discovered upon arrival that the damaged home was that of two active members of the department.

In the post, the department described the two members as "some of our top, most active, responders," and asked the community to keep the family in their thoughts and prayers as they deal with being displaced.
