Modesto’s traditional Veterans Day parade canceled over rising costs. Will it return?

The Modesto Veterans Day Parade for 2024 has been canceled due to increasing costs, an organizer said.

For years, the annual tradition has honored men and women for their brave military service.

Carlos Verduzco, chairman of the parade committee and Veterans Chamber of Commerce Norcal, said organizers are saddened by the decision to cancel this year’s event but are committed to continue the traditional parade in November 2025 after a one-year hiatus.

“In light of the cancellation, we are reaching out to our community for support,” the parade committee said in a news release. “We are actively seeking donations and sponsorships to help fund the 2025 parade. Contributions of any size will make a significant impact and ensure that we can honor our veterans properly next year.”

The Veterans Chamber of Commerce Norcal posted Facebook messages in October saying the Modesto parade was on hold. The messages cited a need for volunteers, event sponsors and committee members to help with planning.

Verduzco, an Army veteran and last year’s parade coordinator, estimated the cost of holding a Veterans Day 2024 parade at $8,500 or more. Significant costs include signs and fees paid to the state Department of Transportation for closing streets.

Other costs include portable restrooms, and insurance for the 2024 parade would cost more than $500, Verduzco said. The parade is a city-sponsored event, so there are no costs for services provided by the city of Modesto, he said.

About 30 organizations usually have entries in the Modesto parade, featuring more than 100 vehicles, flag bearers and other walkers.

In previous years, the parade committee would cover costs by charging a $40 fee for groups entering up to 10 vehicles and a $20 fee for vendors in Graceada Park, along with sponsorships from veterans organizations.

Verduzco didn’t have an exact figure for the shortfall this year, but they’re a few thousand dollars short. The committee is working on a ceremony to honor veterans this year, he said, adding that details will be announced.

To continue the Veterans Day parade in future years, the committee plans to hold fundraisers and seek donations and sponsorships from businesses, organizations and individuals.

Verduzco said they hope to raise a minimum of $10,000 for next year and build up reserves to ensure the minimum expenses are covered every year. Contact information for the Modesto Veterans Day Parade is 209-406-8061 and infovccnc@gmail.com.
