DEKALB, Ill. — A man suspected in a Rockford shooting was shot and killed by police in DeKalb Wednesday after taking a hostage.

Just after 11 p.m., the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office was given a stop and hold request for a vehicle that was involved in a shooting in Rockford.

The vehicle was located via traffic cameras at Peace and Mercantile and was located by police in front of the registered address of the vehicle, which was not provided.

The vehicle fled after police attempted a traffic stop and stop sticks were deployed — causing the it to come to a stop on Rich Road west of Nelson Road.

The driver, a man, was observed armed with a handgun and a passenger was being held hostage, according to police.

A SWAT team was called to the scene and negotiations lasted for several hours with the hostage being released unharmed.

The man suddenly pointed the gun at police and fired several rounds at them, according to authorities. Police returned fire and killed the man.

The man’s body was in the vehicle as police were still at the scene Wednesday morning, SkyCam9 observed.
