Golden Apple: Jessica Hughes

Jessica Hughes is going high tech with her 10th graders. No need for the traditional teaching tools in her Geometry classes. These days, it’s all virtual.

“This is literally the first year I’ve used an app on the computer,” Hughes says. “Usually I use an actual ruler and protractor and compasses. But we’re trying to move to technology-based, so we had the app of constructions. They created some perpendicular bisectors, some angle bisectors. They’re just learning how to use the tools on the app today.”

Miss Hughes does a great job at adapting to the changing times and the ever- evolving world of technology. It’s because she loves what she does.

“I’ve always been good at Math. I was in the Math club. I went to Davidson Fine Arts for high school. So, math has always just been my love.”

Miss Hughes takes a deep interest in her students’ lives. Her investment goes far beyond helping them make good grades.
“With teaching, it comes with raising these kids. I mean, it’s a total job. That comes with not just teaching them math, but they have to learn about life. They have to understand why they need to learn this math, why is it important. They have to learn how to sit in a classroom, how to listen to instruction.
Life skills that will benefit them when they’re a part of the workforce in a few years.

And it’s not just Miss Hughes putting in the work. She’ll tell you, the whole team here at Laney is focused on student success.

“Everybody puts in a lot of hard work to make every day a successful day for these kids.”

“The main goal I want for them is to graduate,” she says. “And then after that, wherever their dreams take them, that makes me the happiest. Whatever their dream is.”
