CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A man was shot and wounded overnight in the Austin neighborhood while, police say, he was trying to break into a car.

The owner of the car is reported to be a retired police officer, according to multiple media outlets.

This happened at about 2:30 a.m. near Fulton and Mayfield, on a residential block.

Police said a 53-year-old man was attempting to break into a vehicle. He was confronted by the owner. There was a struggle and the owner shot the man.

The wounded man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition. He was shot in the right shoulder.

    The incident remains under investigation.
