ASHEBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — A teenage driver was killed in a single-vehicle crash on Sunday, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

At around 5:04 a.m. on Sunday, troopers came to the area of US 220 Business near Cedar Grove Road after getting a report of a crash.

Investigators say that Adrian Jimenez, 15, of Asheboro, was driving north on US 220 Business in a 2008 Ford Expedition SUV, crossed the centerline, went off the road to the left, crashed into a tree and overturned the SUV.

Jimenez died as a result of his injuries at the scene.

Troopers say that Jimenez was the only person in the SUV and confirmed that it is illegal for anyone at the age of 15 to operate a vehicle without a licensed adult present.

When asked about possible charges, highway patrol said they are still working to gather further details surrounding the fatal crash.

Kids that age think they want to start driving or learning how to drive. Car keys should be put away so kids don't find them and go on a joy ride. I'm sure this boy didn't think he would die from wrecking the Expedition. I keep my keys out of sight for this very reason. So sad for the family. 🙏🙏

The parent's said something about him taking the car before and getting in trouble, sounds like they should of kept the keys close to them..so he couldn't have done this ..it's sad 🙏🙏😔
