The Phoenix Police Department has identified the man who was shot and killed inside a dollar store after he grabbed control of an officer’s stun gun. His name, released Wednesday, was Essex Jackson. He was 31.

Officers shot and killed Jackson on Sunday night after he fought officers at a Dollar Tree near 35th and Glendale avenues, police said.

Employees called police because the man was carrying a large knife and refused to leave the store, according to police.

Police said the man ran into a storeroom and climbed on top of a cooler. Officers got him to come down, but when they tried to arrest him, a fight broke out.

That tussle spilled into the main store, where officers tried to use a stun gun on Jackson, police said.

Jackson was instead able to get control of one of the officer’s stun guns, police said. That was when officers shot at Jackson.

The Arizona Republic was not able to find any relatives of Jackson.
