BERLIN, Conn. (WTNH) — The efforts of the firefighters in Berlin are not going unnoticed, and local businesses are making donations to show their appreciation.

Moose’s Burgers made dozens of sandwiches Thursday for the first responders fighting the Hawthorne Fire, and that comes after providing quite a few of their signature burgers the day before.

The Meriden restaurant owners, Carrie Teele and Darrelle Lucas, provided a feast for first responders on Wednesday, including 36 burgers, two trays of salads, two trays of wraps, and 10 cases of water.

“It feels good to be able to help out people in your community. especially first responders and firefighters that are putting their life on the line,” Lucas said.

Hop Haus in Berlin is also pitching in.

“The firefighters been working really hard around the clock, and we just figured it would be a good idea to send them some food — keep them strong,” said Van Hurd, the executive chef for Hop Haus.

It sent over burgers earlier this week, and gave first responders who came into the restaurant free burgers that same night. It planned to send pulled pork sandwiches, as well.

Many of those fighting the Hawthorne Fire in Berlin are volunteers, and others are from out of state, like the helicopter crew from the Maine Forestry Service which filled up its bucket at Silver Lake to help douse the flames on Lamentation Mountain.

The owner of Pizza Kitchen & Grill in Berlin provided 10 pizzas and several salads for lunch on Wednesday.

“We like the support,” Berlin Fire Chief Jonn Massirio said. “It’s very encouraging. It brings up morale here for us.”

The owner of Moose’s Burgers has a personal connection to those who serve. Teele said a few people in her family are firefighters.

“Having holidays, our dinners don’t start until after one of them comes home,” Teele said.

Massirio said that while they really do appreciate all of the donations, he wants people to know they only need food for 20 to 25 people. Otherwise, they have too much.

They also encourage people to donate money to CERT which supports first responders.
