Before performing Thursday at a rally with Democratic vice-presidential nominee Gov. Tim Walz, Grammy winner James Taylor made sure to tell the crowd what it means to be a Democrat.

"My father was a true-blue Democrat always," Taylor said. "He welcomed passionately the Civil Rights Act and he stayed blue. When we lived here, he had a sense that North Carolina was a place … that happily engages with the challenges we have, and I think that is so represented by everybody that is here tonight."

Noting North Carolina's status as a battleground state, Taylor also said he was proud for North Carolina to be "in a position to save the country."

"We haven't got time to fool around," he said. "We need to get to work."

During the Harris-Walz rally at Greenfield Lake Amphitheater, Taylor invited the crowd to sing "America the Beautiful" before continuing with a performance of his most popular songs, including "Sweet Baby James" and "Carolina in My Mind." The crowd sang along with the chorus to "Shower The People."

The 76-year-old was joined on stage by his wife, Kim, and son Henry, who performed some of James' many hits.

Before Taylor performed, Walz critiqued the Trump-Vance campaign, delivering remarks focused on education, public safety, gun violence, reproductive freedom, and other issues.
