Spooky Streets: Gravity Hill Named California's Scariest Road in Driver Survey

A recent survey of 3,000 drivers revealed the roads they fear the most, with Altadena’s infamous Gravity Hill taking the top spot in California. Ranked as the 13th most feared road nationally, Gravity Hill is known for eerie phenomena, where drivers report feeling their cars being pushed uphill by unseen forces. The road is steeped in ghostly legends, including a story of a young girl and her friends who died in a tragic accident.

Two other California roads also made the list. Black Star Canyon Road in Orange County ranked 66th, with its haunted reputation tied to the spirits of Native Americans and shadowy figures seen by night travelers. Proctor Valley Road in San Diego, ranked 125th, is home to the legend of the Proctor Valley Monster and eerie encounters with ghostly apparitions and phantom hitchhikers.

This list of the 140 scariest roads across the U.S. highlights how local legends and supernatural sightings continue to unnerve drivers, making these roads must-see destinations for thrill-seekers—or ones to avoid after dark.

There are spots like that all over. It's a similar story for all of them. It's definitely a weird phenomenon though.
