MAULDIN, S.C. (WSPA) – First responders in Mauldin are facing off against each other this weekend in a competition to raise money for local heroes.

The ‘Badge v. Badge’ event kicks off Saturday, October 26th from 10am-2pm at Mauldin High School. It’s where the Mauldin Police Department and Mauldin Fire Department are competing against each other in physical fitness challenges to raise money for veterans.

The first responders are expected to duke it out to see who can finish the most pushups, sit ups, deadlifts, ball throws and planks. The department that wins takes home a trophy for bragging rights.

The event is free and open to the public. Organizers said the goal is to deepen the appreciation for those who serve. All proceeds from the event benefit Vets Helping Vets in Greenville.

“It really carries significant weight. That little bit of a thank you, that our folks are able to give back to the heroes, makes a difference in their lives,” said Homes for Heroes Foundation Director Jay Flynn, who is a partner in the event.

First Step Realty in Mauldin, a Homes for Heroes Foundation affiliate, is hosting the festivities.

“Everybody asks why I do this, and it’s because I don’t feel children are taught respect for what these gentlemen have done, or for heroes in general,” owner of First Step Realty Maria Godfrey told 7NEWS.

Organizers said the ‘Badge v. Badge’ event is the first of its kind for Mauldin and packs plenty of family fun in with live music, food trucks and more.

“I sometimes think that vets get pushed to the side, and it’s a way for us to honor them,” added Tracy Davenport, who also partnered to launch the event.

A trunk or treat event for families will follow.
