A child who doesn't communicate... oh, good grief, language and communication are NOT the same thing. Most children can communicate that they're in distress well before language develops. That said, it's called HYPERLEXIA, and Autistic people have been using it to learn language on our own for decades. My father, me, and my nephews all learned how to talk after learning how to read. And while I don't push reading, if a child is interested in the alphabet or numbers, we're going to play with the alphabet or numbers. I work in speech therapy, and I've had several clients who started speaking after they learned how to read. This research is welcome, but a bit late to the party, I've been encouraging any and all pre-reading and reading skills in my clients for over 20 years now.
