WATERBURY, Conn. (WTNH) — A jury found a Bronx man guilty of ambushing and fatally shooting a Waterbury man in 2021.

Gerome Phillips, 27, was captured on camera shooting 25-year-old James David Smith in May 2021 as Smith was moving into a new apartment. Phillips was wearing a black mask, a hoodie and a glove, and had covered the gun with a shopping bag, when he sneaked up behind Smith and shot him in the head multiple times.

Phillips, who lived in Waterbury at the time, then fled to the Bronx, where he was arrested the next month.

He will be sentenced on Jan. 16.
