Record heat will return to parts of New Mexico Sunday and Monday afternoon. A storm system moves in Tuesday, bringing in much colder air by next Wednesday.

Temperatures are cooler all across New Mexico Friday afternoon thanks to a cold front early this morning. The biggest drop in temperatures have been across eastern New Mexico, where highs are over 20° cooler in some places compared to Thursday. It will be a chilly and cool night across the state, but a warming trend starts on Saturday. This will culminate with more record high temperatures Sunday afternoon.

More record high temperatures are likely Monday afternoon for central and southern parts of New Mexico, but cooler air will start moving into the Four Corners region as a storm system approaches the state. A couple spotty showers and mountain snow will even be possible by Monday evening in northwest New Mexico and southwest Colorado.

Our next fall storm system starts moving into New Mexico Tuesday. For most of the state, the winds will be the biggest story Tuesday afternoon. Southwest winds could gust up to 60 mph across parts of New Mexico, causing areas of blowing dust and an elevated fire danger. Spotty showers and mountain snow will continue into northern New Mexico and southern Colorado. A strong cold front will sweep across the state Tuesday evening, bringing a sharp drop in temperatures. Highs on Wednesday afternoon will be as much as 30° cooler in some places compared to Monday. It will be some of the coolest air we have seen this season.

The storm system moves out of the state on Thursday, but it will bring part of New Mexico their first freeze of the season Thursday morning. This includes the Albuquerque Metro. Temperatures will be warmer Thursday afternoon, but only a few degrees with many areas actually staying cooler than normal for Halloween.
