NORTH PORT — The city of North Port's hazardous waste event was cut short Saturday.

City officials closed the event early due to logistics and safety concerns related to traffic.

Cars were apparently backed up from the Public Works building, at 1850 West Price Blvd., to Toledo Blade Boulevard.

Officials stated that attendance was higher than they have ever seen before.

Those who need to discard hazardous waste can still do so at the Sarasota County Landfill, 4000 Knights Trail Road.

Officials apologized for the inconvenience via social media, and stated another similar event will be scheduled in the future. A new date is undecided. Traffic cones and an LED sign were also placed in front of the Public Works building, notifying residents about the early closure.
