1 dead in motorcycle-car collision on I-5 Friday night

A motorcyclist died Friday night in a collision with a large SUV near Grand Mound, authorities said.

The driver of the 2007 GMC Yukon, a 31-year-old woman from Lakewood, and her passenger, a 31-year-old woman from Tacoma, were unharmed.

Around 8 p.m. Oct. 25, the two vehicles were both traveling south on Interstate 5, about eight miles past Maytown and eight miles north of Centralia, according to a Washington State Patrol report.

Near milepost 88 in Grand Mound, where the highway passes over State Route 12, the motorcycle reportedly struck the SUV then collided with the right-lane barrier.

The SUV stopped in the right shoulder, while the totaled Suzuki GSX600 landed in the right lane.

The motorcyclist, a 38-year-old man from Duvall, was killed.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. The victim will be identified after next of kin are notified.

Trooper John Dattilo, WSP spokesperson, said Saturday morning that “contributing circumstances are still under investigation at this point.”

The southbound lane of I-5 was closed for four hours and 15 minutes. Traffic was diverted off the highway at Exit 88 during that time. The roadway reopened between midnight and 1 a.m. Saturday.
