For a true taste of Southern comfort, look no further than this Mississippi Mud Chicken recipe. With tender chicken infused with the rich flavors of au jus, ranch seasoning, and pepperoncini peppers, this dish is both easy to prepare and full of bold flavors. The butter melts over the chicken as it slow cooks, creating a flavorful, gravy-like sauce without adding any liquid. Served over rice or mashed potatoes, it’s the kind of meal that’s comforting, satisfying, and perfect for a busy day when you want something delicious waiting for you in the crockpot.

The beauty of this recipe lies in its simplicity. Just a few ingredients bring a savory, tangy, and slightly spicy taste that’s unmistakably Southern. The pepperoncini peppers add a hint of heat without overpowering the dish, while the au jus and ranch seasoning bring a depth of flavor that makes every bite deliciously satisfying.

    Recipe for Mississippi Mud Chicken

    Ingredients:

    • 3 pounds of chicken thighs, legs, or breasts
    • 6 pepperoncini peppers (without liquid)
    • 2 (1-ounce) packets au jus gravy mix
    • 1 (0.4-ounce) package buttermilk ranch dressing mix
    • 1 stick of Land-o-Lakes salted butter, chopped

    Directions:

    1. Prepare the Chicken: Place the chicken thighs (or other preferred cuts) in the bottom of the crockpot.
    2. Add Seasonings: Sprinkle the two packets of au jus gravy mix and ranch dressing mix evenly over the chicken.
    3. Top with Butter and Peppers: Chop the butter into small pieces and scatter over the chicken. Lay the pepperoncini peppers on top.
    4. Cook Slowly: Set the crockpot to low and cook for 5-6 hours, letting the seasonings soak into the chicken as it becomes tender.
    5. Serve and Enjoy: Serve this rich, flavorful chicken over a bed of rice or a scoop of mashed potatoes, letting the gravy-like sauce enhance each bite.

This Mississippi Mud Chicken is ideal for those who love Southern flavors with a touch of spice and a hearty, comforting finish. The slow-cooked chicken, surrounded by its flavorful sauce, is both rich and melt-in-your-mouth tender. It’s perfect for family dinners, gatherings, or simply a cozy meal at home.

I’ve had the roast version but not chicken. I just brought turkey wings last night so I’ll improvise and use those instead. I also like adding onion soup mix and a can of cream of mushroom.
