PHILLIPSBURG, NJ - On October 26, 2024, the Firth Youth Center proudly hosted the return of the Punt, Pass, and Kick Competition at the Firth Youth Center.
You read that right in the headline, this lineup of boys and girls first place finishers are going to punt, pass and kick against the Easton Red Rovers during the Powderpuff game! Let’s go Liners!
Exceeding last year’s total of 81 children in the first year, 90+ pre-registered aged 9-13, hailing from Phillipsburg and its neighboring districts, to participate in the Punt, Pass, and Kick experience. We even met some Easton Rovers who crossed the bridge, but tsk tsk, this competition is for the Garnet and Gray team and future Stateliners.
Beyond learning the fundamentals of punting, passing, and kicking, the highlight for many was the fiercely competitive 40-yard dash. In fact, some adults took a test drive of the dash for friendly competitive fun. Largely bragging rights and competition among friends. Perhaps they didn’t see we captured that action too.
Event organizers Ernie Honey and Steve Searfass were onsite with a large number of volunteers from youth organizations, adults in the community and school officials.
Free hot dogs and snacks were provided thanks to the generosity of Bimbo Bakeries USA, St. Luke’s University Health System, Van Cleef Engineering, Remington & Vernick Engineers, Mrs. Valeri Patti and Todd M. Tersigni. Tersigni continued the tradition of donating the awards for all the winners and stood with the committee to present each of the top three finishers in each age group with their awards. The school district was a big help with staff volunteers and organizing the rivalry piece for the event said Sheedy.
Balloons at the event were designed by Hull of a Balloon for some extra Liner decoration.
Kelly Post-Sheedy, Executive Director of the Firth Youth Center said some inspiring words to the youth, “Try something new”. She reminded many of the returning youth that if they improved their time, that’s a great accomplishment, but together, that means everyone accomplished something big. And many, tried something new.
