Road Warrior: Rebuilt Cherry/Summit intersection takes shape with paving

Exactly when Summit Street will reopen between Cherry and Jackson streets isn’t yet certain, but a lot of that zone was paved last week.

That closing and the single-lane zone on Cherry between Superior Street and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Bridge — including a separate project on the bridge itself — has been arguably the Toledo area’s most chronic traffic headache for more than a month now.

Once Summit is finished between Jackson and Cherry, the other half of the Summit/Cherry intersection will be rebuilt. That will cut off Summit on the north side of Cherry, but access between the King bridge and downtown should improve considerably.

That latter construction stage also will be helped by the city’s conversion last week of Huron Street to two-way traffic north of Cherry, which will be followed in early November by the similar conversion of Erie Street north of Cherry to two-way traffic.

The slopes along State Rt. 110 near Napoleon are indeed slippery.

The highway already was closed for repair of two slope failures between U.S. 6 and Henry County Road 12 when a third problem spot was located recently.

Rather than develop and schedule a separate repair contract, the Ohio Department of Transportation decided to add the work to the existing job.

As a result, Route 110 now will be closed until mid-December. A detour using U.S. 6/24 and Industrial Drive will remain posted.

    ● I-75: Lane closings possible at Lime City Road, north of the Ohio Turnpike, for work on the overpass.

    ● I-75: Left lane closed northbound, right lane closed southbound at Hancock County Road 99 during an overpass replacement and interchange reconstruction project.

    ● I-75 (Mich.): Lane closings, Exit 5 (Erie) to north of Exit 9 (LaSalle), for roadway reconstruction. Southbound traffic is crossed over to the northbound side. The southbound exit ramp at Exit 9 (South Otter Creek) is closed. Use LaPlaisance Road (Exit 11) or Luna Pier Road (Exit 6) instead.

    ● Ohio Turnpike: Traffic narrows to two lanes each way two miles east of the Elmore interchange (Exit 81) for bridge work. Be alert for other short-term work zones during seasonal maintenance.

    ● I-280: Southbound right lane closed from Woodville to Walbridge for slope repairs. The Woodville entrance to southbound I-280 is also closed.

    ● I-475/U.S. 23: No shoulders and traffic is shifted between U.S. 24 (Exit 4) and Angola Road for reconstruction and widening.

    ● U.S. 23 (Mich.): Lane closings near Milan during roadway work and replacement of the Plank Road overpass.

    ● State Rt. 2: Lane closings west of State Rt. 163 in Ottawa County through November.

    ● U.S. 6/24: Pavement repairs require a westbound lane closing near State Rt. 108 in Wauseon Monday through Thursday, and an eastbound lane closing on U.S. 6 at the Maumee River bridge Monday through Friday.

    ● U.S. 24 (Fearing): Lanes closed between Airport Highway and Hill for overpass replacement. Consider Byrne Road as an alternative route between Airport and Hill.

    ● State Rt. 51 (Monroe): Lane closings for utility work near Flanders Road through Friday.

    ● State Rt. 65: Closed until Friday between Five Point and Roachton roads for a culvert replacement. Detour via State Rts. 582 and 25.

    ● Martin Luther King, Jr. Bridge: Reduced to one lane each way for repairs and reconfiguration related to the Glass City River Walk.

    ● State Rts. 65 (Summit) and 120 (Cherry): Summit closed for reconstruction between Jackson and Cherry, while Cherry is reduced to one lane each way between Huron and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Bridge. No left turn from westbound Cherry to Superior, and left turns from Cherry to Huron are nearly impossible during peak travel times.

    ● Broadway Street/South Avenue: This intersection is closed for reconstruction until mid-November. Local access only is maintained on the intersection’s approaches. Two-way traffic is restored on Broadway between Western and Segur Avenue. Broadway is one-way southbound between Western and Stebbins, except for the full closing near South.

    ● State Rt. 582: Closed to through traffic between I-75 and State Rt. 25 for roundabout construction at an intersection east of Route 25 until early November. A posted detour will use Route 25, I-475, and I-75.

    ● McCord Road/Bancroft Street: Intersection closed for roundabout construction until Friday, weather permitting. McCord detours to King between Central and Dorr, while Bancroft detours to Dorr between King and Holland-Sylvania.

    ● Summit Street (Mich.): The I-75 Exit 2 Connector is restricted to a single lane governed by traffic signals for ongoing bridge work just north of I-75.
