Local postgame show blasts team after bad loss

A season that had already been a massive disappointment got even worse for the New York Jets on Sunday. The Jets, 7.5-point favorites against the New England Patriots, lost 25-22. It was New York’s fifth consecutive loss and the third since firing coach Robert Saleh.

In the days leading up to the game, quarterback Aaron Rodgers chided the media for their negativity about the then 2-4 Jets. We’re guessing Rodgers won’t enjoy hearing what the crew of SNY’s Jets Postgame Live had to say after the loss to New England moved the Jets to 2-5.

They were in no mood to sugarcoat anything, something that was clear from the start of the show.

“A Jets season that began with Super Bowl expectations is over on Oct. 27,” host Steve Gelbs said in the open. “I’m not sure that I’ve ever seen a more inexcusable loss than the Jets game against New England falling 25-22 against the Patriots and again, essentially ending their season. All areas of the team continue to look dysfunctional. And it’s very hard to even project where this team goes from here.”

Bart Scott then said that, as a former Jet, he was “disgusted,” “embarrassed” and “ashamed.”

“You know, I defended this team every single week up until this point,” Scott added. But now they have to take accountability. Now you run out of people to blame. They gotta take responsibility for what’s going to be said nationally — locally. This is on them. Because now they’ve become exactly what people always say. The same old Jets. They gotta wear that. They gotta own it. Each one of them on that roster earned that. There’s nowhere to go from here. I don’t wanna hear about next week. You can say whatever you want to say, nationally, locally, whatever you want to say nationally, locally, whatever you say to the media to try to explain it away. Nobody really cares at this point.”

Another former Jet, Willie Colon, then compared the 2024 season unfavorably to Zach Wilson’s time as quarterback of the team.

“This is beyond tough to swallow. We’re not even into November and the season’s over. We went through the Zach Wilson era but there was still a glimmer of hope. This is officially over,” Colon said.

Connor Rogers talked about the team’s performance as a whole but focused a lot on struggling kicker Greg Zuerlein, who missed a field goal (from 44 yards) and an extra point in the loss.

“The fact that they trotted out Greg the Leg in this game, to me, is wild,” Rogers said. “It’s just kind of a slap in the face to everyone in the organization. You’ve watched him now lose you two games. He doesn’t have any confidence. And then he trotted out today. You lose a three-point game and he’s a four-point difference. I’m usually somebody who says it should never be viewed upon as missing a field goal is the difference in the game. But now this is multiple times.”

Gelbs agreed with the idea that Zuerlein should be gone but also made it clear that the struggling should not be seen as an excuse for the rest of the team.

“As bad as Zuerlein has been — and there is no excuse for him to be on this roster currently, let alone tomorrow,” Gelbs said. “There is no scenario where the Jets, playing for their season, against a horrific New England Patriots team, should come down to four points that were off the board because of their kicker. This is a team they should have dominated.”

    There’s no disputing that point.

Heading into Week 8, the Patriots were 1-5, with their only win coming in Week 1. Part of New England’s five-game losing streak was a 24-3 blowout loss to the Jets in Week 3. To date, that is New York’s most recent win.

Before Sunday’s game, former Jets coach and current ESPN analyst Rex Ryan said that the team had “ The softest schedule ever , I think I’ve ever seen in a 10-game schedule.”

One of those 10 games is now in the books as a loss. As harsh as the criticism was after Sunday’s loss in New England, if the Jets don’t start winning some games over the remainder of that soft schedule, the criticism will only get louder.
