    October 28, 2024

Good morning, NewsNation! With the start of a new week, there’s a lot going on. Let’s catch up:

Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally: 5 takeaways

    https://img.particlenews.com/image.php?url=2jA2PF_0wPMujWD00

Trump rally: With just over a week before Election Day , former President Donald Trump hosted a rally at New York’s Madison Square Garden on Sunday. While Trump is unlikely to be competitive in New York on Election Day, the event generated media attention and served as a way to spread his message to voters. The Trump campaign brought out a number of high-profile speakers , some who overshadowed the event with incendiary rhetoric. Takeaways >

Puerto Rico: One of the speakers at the Trump rally, stand-up comic Tony Hinchcliffe, labeled Puerto Rico a “floating island of garbage.” The Harris campaign immediately criticized Hinchcliffe’s joke , and Puerto Rican music star Bad Bunny backed the vice president shortly after Hinchcliffe’s appearance at the rally. The Trump campaign distanced itself from Hinchcliffe, with senior adviser Danielle Alvarez saying: “This joke does not reflect the views of President Trump or the campaign.” Read more >

Trump’s closing message: The Madison Square Garden rally was billed as the opening of his closing argument to voters before Election Day. Trump repeated many of his same attacks on Harris, called the U.S. an “occupied country” because of a surge in immigration and emphasized his plans to impose tariffs on foreign imports and companies that outsource production. Full breakdown >

New tax proposal: During the rally, Trump rolled out a new tax proposal , saying he would support a tax credit for family caregivers who take care of a parent or loved one. Earlier this month, Harris introduced a new plan to expand Medicare benefits so that the program covers the cost of long-term home care for older Americans to help people care for both their own children and their aging parents. 2024 election: With just one week until Election Day , cities across the U.S. are beefing up security at polling places , driven by a troubling increase in threats directed toward election workers. Some local governments have coordinated with law enforcement to ensure safe voting and implement new security measures at polling locations. A visible police presence, installing cameras and training poll workers on how to handle disruptive individuals are just a few steps being taken. Full report >

DOD lacked paperwork for $1.1B in Ukraine aid: Inspector general

    https://img.particlenews.com/image.php?url=0YJgAm_0wPMujWD00

Ukraine aid: An audit by the U.S. Inspector General says the Department of Defense didn’t properly document more than $1 billion in payments to Ukraine following Russia’s 2022 invasion of Kyiv . The audit, which reviewed $2.1 billion funds approved for Ukraine that year, found that more than half of the payments, roughly 67%, lacked paperwork or were improperly recorded. Payments require disbursement vouchers and invoices outlining the purpose of the funds, which the audit found were often incomplete or completely ignored. What to know >

McDonald’s Quarter Pounder back on the menu after testing rules out beef patties as E. coli source

    https://img.particlenews.com/image.php?url=3feVcu_0wPMujWD00

    E. coli outbreak: Quarter Pounders are returning to McDonald’s menus after the fast-food giant says testing ruled out beef patties as the source of the E. coli outbreak that killed one person and left at least 75 others sick across 13 states. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration believes slivered onions from a single supplier are the likely source of contamination, McDonald’s said. The company said it will resume selling the Quarter Pounder at affected restaurants — mostly in the Midwest and Mountain states — without slivered onions in the coming week. What to know >
