GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Fall cleanup is well underway in West Michigan. Many cities are helping to make it easier for residents by offering pick-up or drop-off options.

    BATTLE CREEK

In Battle Creek, the city uses Republic Services to pick up yard waste and leaves until Dec. 6.

According to the city’s website , the items must be put into paper bags that are made for yard waste or in containers clearly marked as yard waste. Labels are available from the city’s utility billing at City Hall, located at 10 N. Division St., or at the department of public works building, located at 150 S. Kendall St.

Battle Creek also has a drop-off location at Brice Pit, located at 715 W. River Road. It is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

    GRAND HAVEN

The city of Grand Haven contracts with Republic Services to collect yard waste at the curbside from April 1 to Dec. 31. The debris needs to be put into paper yard waste bags or a container marked “yard waste,” the city’s website said.

    GRAND RAPIDS

In Grand Rapids, the city offers yard waste collection on the same day as regular waste collection. Multiple options are available to meet your needs: a yard waste cart, a yard waste paper bag and a yard waste bulk tag.

The city does offer drop-off services at 2001 Butterworth St SW . Learn more here .

    HOLLAND

In Holland, the city’s leaf collection goes until Nov. 17. Residents are asked to put the leaves on the side of the curb.

“If branches or other debris are in your leaf piles, your pile will not be picked up. Leaf piles left in yard areas cannot be picked up due to the potential damage to yards, sprinklers systems, or landscaping by the trucks and equipment used in the program,” the city said on its website.

    KALAMAZOO

In Kalamazoo, the city will start collecting leaves for residents on Nov. 4 with two pickups scheduled for each house through mid-December. The city asks that the items that are being collected be put out the Sunday night before the date of the assigned pickup.

Kalamazoo residents are being asked to put leaves, small sticks (less than 4 feet long by 2 inches in diameter), grass clippings and organic debris on the curb lawn, at the street or the edge of the sidewalk if there is no curb lawn. Biodegradable materials like cardboard boxes or paper yard waste bags must be used, the city said.

“Since this program is more susceptible to weather delays than other waste collection services, it’s important for residents to follow all program guidelines to prevent avoidable delays in collection. In some cases, program delays may prevent crews from completing the second pickup for all areas of the city. Should this happen, residents can store their leaves and place them out for collection during the Spring Clean-Up in April,” the city of Kalamazoo said in a release.

Kalamazoo also has drop-off options. Residents can drop off their materials at 322 E Stockbridge Ave. Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. from Nov. 4 to Dec. 20.

    PORTAGE

The city of Portage leaf pick-up happens from Oct. 28 through Dec. 6, or until prohibited by weather.

According to the city’s website , only loose leaves — which will need to be raked off the grass and into the street — or leaves bagged in biodegradable paper bags placed next to the curb will be collected. Residents are asked to put the leaves on the curb by 7 a.m. on the scheduled pick-up date.
