In a surprising turn of events, the last standing location of Sam Seltzer’s Steakhouse in St. Petersburg, Florida, has been sold for $3.9 million to Service Corporation International (SCI), one of the largest funeral service providers in the country. Known for its classic aged steaks, prime rib, and fan-favorite baby back ribs, Sam Seltzer’s was a staple for Florida’s steak lovers for nearly three decades. The site will soon be transformed into a funeral home under SCI's Dignity Memorial brand, repurposing the iconic location to serve the community in a very different way.

The Rise and Fall of Sam Seltzer's Steakhouse

Founded in Tampa in 1995, Sam Seltzer’s quickly grew in popularity, gaining a loyal customer base across Florida for its quality steaks and casual dining experience. At its height, the chain had as many as thirteen locations. However, the company faced financial difficulties and filed for bankruptcy in 2008, which led to the gradual closure of many locations. Only a few years later, Harold Seltzer, a family member, revived three of the original locations under the new name Harold Seltzer’s Steakhouse in St. Petersburg, Port Richey, and Clearwater.

The St. Petersburg location was the last to remain, cherished by locals and praised on review platforms. As recently as 2021, the restaurant ranked among the top 10% on TripAdvisor for its exceptional quality, earning glowing reviews from steak lovers. Longtime customer Roger left a review saying, "Best experience I ever had in a steakhouse. Porterhouse steak was cooked perfectly… In addition to salad, got big, fluffy, doughy rolls, which I devoured… Highly recommend."

Transitioning to a New Chapter: A Community Center Under Dignity Memorial

SCI’s recent acquisition of the site marks a poignant shift from dining to a place of remembrance. Under the Dignity Memorial brand, the building will be transformed into a “celebration of life center,” providing memorial and funeral services to the St. Petersburg community. This reimagined space aims to offer a peaceful environment where people can honor their loved ones.

Harold Seltzer’s website confirmed the transition, stating: “The property will be transformed into a Dignity Memorial®-branded celebration of life center, which will continue to serve the community in a new and meaningful way…”

For many Floridians, the memories of meals enjoyed at Sam Seltzer’s will now blend with the purpose of remembrance and tribute. The new center is set to open soon, ensuring the site remains an integral part of the community, albeit in a different role.

Well, I guess that’s what happens when people are eating animals and it kills them. We killed them and it turns around and kills us so I can see where they’re going to need the funeral home sadly.
