Seahawks PFF grades: AJ Barner, Coby Bryant among leaders for Week 8 loss to Bills

The Seattle Seahawks whooped again by a heavyweight team, going down against the Buffalo Bills at home on Sunday by a score of 31-10.

Let's see what we can learn from the Pro Football Focus grades for Seattle this week.

    AJ Barner leads Seahawks offense

There wasn't much to like on either side of the ball this week, but one big exception to the rule was the performance of rookie tight end AJ Barner. Though it's only been a handful of games Barner looks like he might have a future as a pass-catching option in this offense. He caught both of his targets from Geno Smith, totaling 34 yards. For his efforts, Barner earned the highest grade on offense (85.5 overall) this week. On the season Barner is up to 105 yards and a touchdown, which may not sound like much but he has a 100% catch rate.

    Geno Smith gets middling grade

It wasn't a particularly sharp afternoon for starting quarterback Geno Smith, who ended up with a line of 21/29 for 212 yards, no touchdowns, one interception and a 78.5 passer rating. His QBR was just 11, though. Nevertheless, PFF gave Smith an above-average grade, with a 72.7 overall and a 74.0 in passing. It's difficult to blame Smith too much for the loss when DK Metcalf was out and his offensive line is what it is...

    Seahawks offensive line bombs again

Speaking of which, Seattle's offensive line was once again a major liability this week. They couldn't block for the run to save their lives on Sunday, and Ken Walker finished with just 12 yards on nine carries even though he's playing his position about as well as anybody in the NFL right now.

Geno Smith was only sacked once but that doesn't necessarily mean they protected him well. At the bottom of PFF's offensive grades this week you'll find three of the last four were starting OL. Center Connor Williams came in at 48.2, right tackle Mike Jerrell at 43.9 and right guard Christian Haynes with the lowest grade on offense at 36.5 overall, though he only played 11 snaps. Left tackle Charles Cross and right guard Anthony Bradford earned much better grades by comparison, but only mediocre marks overall.

Coby Bryant tops atrocious Seahawks defense

On the other side of the ball, safety Coby Bryant had the best game of his career so far. He totaled six tackles and one pass breakup - but the PBU saved a touchdown after Devon Witherspoon got beat and Bryant had to peel off his assignment to make a play. For his efforts Bryant earned the highest defensive grade this week from PFF at 70.5 overall.

Unfortunately, the rest of the defense was pretty awful all around. Nobody else earned a grade of 66.0 or better. At the very bottom of the chart were edge rusher Derick Hall (42.0 overall) and nose tackle Johnathan Hankins (30.7 overall).
