MERKEL, Texas ( KTAB/KRBC ) – An Abilene man died in a rollover accident in Merkel on Monday morning.

On Monday, October 28, at 7:10 a.m., a single-vehicle crash occurred on I-20 near the Iron Horse Travel Center by mile marker 271.

The investigation revealed that a vehicle was traveling east on I-20 when the driver lost control, causing it to hit the guardrail. The driver overcorrected, resulting in the vehicle rolling over multiple times off the roadway.

The driver, 44-year-old Joshua Williams of Abilene, was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. According to the Merkel Police Department, Williams was not wearing a seatbelt. The passenger, who wore a seatbelt, suffered minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital.

The Merkel Police Department, Texas Department of Public Safety, and the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the accident. Drugs and alcohol are not believed to be a factor.
