A Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office deputy was celebrated this month as one of three recipients of the annual Trauma Intervention Program Northwest’s Good Samaritan Awards.

In May, Deputy Brandon Smith responded to a call of an 81-year-old man who died of natural causes in Fairview. His “patience, kindness and caring” were noticed by TIPNW volunteers and other first responders, providing comfort and care for family members struggling with the death of a loved one.

That act of going “above and beyond” led to Deputy Smith being nominated four times for the annual award.

He was one of three recipients of the 2024 Good Samaritan Awards, which had more than 100 nominations for the category that recognizes emergency responders, business owners and community members.

TIP is a group of specially-trained volunteers who provide emotional aid and practical support/resources to victims of traumatic events in the first few hours following a tragedy. They are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and are often requested by police, fire, paramedics, hospitals, medical examiners, schools and businesses.

They arrive following a suicide, natural or unexpected death; to aid victims of crime or fire; during drownings or motor vehicle accidents; and in support of those who witness crimes or are affected by gang/gun violence.

The organization has 200 volunteers that respond to an average of 170 calls per month. Learn more online at tipnw.org
