Students at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia are still healing from and mourning the losses of their classmates and teachers when a shooter opened fire back on September 4th. The 14-year-old gunman killed two teachers and two students, and seven others were injured. The senseless, violent act devastated the Winder community, and many of the residents there have just been hoping to return to a sense of normalcy. Jelly Roll decided that it would be the least he could do to put on a special performance for the people in the Georgia town, even if it only meant that residents could escape reality for a couple of hours. So before he was set to play State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia this past Saturday night, the rapper-turned-country-artist carved out time in his schedule to drop into Winder, Georgia to put on a private afternoon concert for students and their families. Jelly Roll set up in Winder's Jug Tavern Park and played a full set for those that were affected by the Apalachee High School shooting. The City of Winder stated that the concert would be the perfect opportunity to "foster healing and unity for the students, faculty, and families of Apalachee High School as they come together to reflect and support one another following September’s tragedy." And while Jelly Roll was performing, he emphasized that, and let everyone know that he did everything in his power to get the concert organized in order to help provide some temporary relief:
"I don't care what it takes. I've got to go down there and I've got to meet these people that have been coming together and doing this and changing the world and Georgia slowly. I wanted to come talk to the kids at Apalachee High School. That's what I wanted to do, so thank you all for letting us come sing for y'all today." Those that attended the private concert voiced their support for Jelly Roll, saying that what he did for Winder was "really nice" and that it undoubtedly helped to provide healing for a community that's been "really messed up" by the violent act in early September. He took a moment to remember each of those who were killed, students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, and teachers Cristina Irimie and Richard Aspinwall:
@safevillain @Jelly Roll honoring the 2 teachers and 2 students from the Apalachee School shooting... honoring the community and students who survived. Thank you for the blessing Jelly, the kids loved it. #jellyrollofficial #jellyrollconcert #jellyroll #apalacheeschoolshooting #ahs #apalachee #cheestrong #cheenation #barrowstrong #apalacheehighschool #fyp #fypシ @Ivy🕷🕸 ♬ 10 Minutes of Silence - Silenzio
Just goes to show you how powerful music can be, and how incredibly sympathetic Jelly Roll towards those that are in need. He never shies away from using his platform to help others, and in this case, it sounds as though he pushed for he and his team to travel to Winder to put on this concert to benefit the broken community.
