NEW MEXICO (KRQE)  – The sexual assault charges against a former New Mexico State Police officer have been dropped. Last year, then-NMSP Officer Isiah Cheromiah was arrested after a woman came forward saying he sexually assaulted her when they were both soldiers with the New Mexico National Guard in Las Vegas.

Cheromiah was supposed to go to trial this week but an expert witness for the prosecutors deemed the alleged victim wasn’t credible and had a history of making up allegations. Cheromiah’s defense attorney said the district attorney then dropped the charges.

“I do think once the dismissal got filed, I saw him just kind of reignited his excitement for life, and just his ability to get re-certified and move on with things,” said Attorney Lizzy Bunker.

The charges were dropped without prejudice meaning they can be refiled. Cheromiah was eventually fired from NMSP after his arrest. He is now working on getting his law enforcement certification reinstated.
