Cold Pacific System Brings Snow, Rain, and Freezing Temperatures to Utah

A powerful cold Pacific system is sweeping across Utah, bringing widespread mountain snow, valley rain, and plunging temperatures that are expected to linger through the weekend. The National Weather Service in Salt Lake City reports that a significant cold front is moving through northwestern Utah and will be reinforced later this evening as a cold upper-level trough pushes into the eastern Great Basin.

Moderate to heavy valley rain and mountain snow will begin around midnight in northern and western Utah, with snowfall possibly reaching as low as 5,000 feet in some areas. By Tuesday afternoon, the primary precipitation will shift toward southwestern Wyoming, while Utah sees spotty showers through Wednesday afternoon.

An added factor to watch is potential lake-effect precipitation near the Great Salt Lake, with enhanced showers likely in western Salt Lake County and the Tooele area. Freezing temperatures are expected in most valleys by Wednesday morning, prompting a freeze watch for areas without prior freezes this fall. Residents are advised to winterize outdoor plants and systems sensitive to frost as cold air settles into the region.
