GLENS FALLS, N.Y. ( NEWS10 ) — The Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council (LARAC), a non-profit arts organization founded in 1972, is closing one of its art galleries in downtown Glens Falls. LARAC’s Mountain Gallery at 21 Bay Street is set to close on March 29.

“LARAC is sad to see the closing of LARAC’s Mountain Gallery, an expansion that we knew was an experimental effort and chance; one we felt was worth taking,” Executive Director Philip Casabona told NEWS10. “It was a wonderful experience that was well received and supported by our community and provided a location for beautiful exhibitions.”

The Mountain Gallery was previously owned by artist Susan Beadle. Casabona said LARAC took over the gallery since it wanted a second location and had the financial ability to keep the gallery open.

Casabona said LARAC is now focusing its staff and finances on the Lapham Gallery, its flagship location at 7 Lapham Place. For 25 years, LARAC has used the Lapham Gallery for its art showcases, gift shop, festivals, workshops, and grant program.

“We learned a great deal from this experience and we are not shutting the doors on the idea of having a second location in town someday,” said Casabona.

LARAC’s Mountain Gallery Curator, Diane Swanson, will be transitioning to Program Director for LARAC on April 1, said Casabona. Swanson will continue to grow and facilitate the workshops at the Lapham location.

The Mountain Gallery will be having a farewell event on March 29 at 5 p.m. The gallery will be having its final show, Here & There, from February 23 to March 29.

“LARAC wants to thank all our members, the community, and everyone who supported LARAC’s Mountain Gallery and our efforts to keep it open,” said Casabona. “We would also like to thank Glen Street Associates for all they have done for LARAC, the Mountain Gallery, and all they do for Glens Falls.”
