TROY, NY ( NEWS10) — The Section 2 girls basketball Class C title game wasn’t your average championship game. It was also a rubber match between Duanesburg and Greenwich.

After winning their respective section titles the last two years, the Eagles and Witches have split the last two Class C-CC games to dictate who advanced to the state tournament. With no Class CC this year, the two teams battled it out for the Class C crown.

Duanesburg opened up a 16-6 lead heading into the second quarter. The Witches opened the second quarter with a 9-0 run to cut the deficit to 1, but the Eagles extended the lead back to 8 before the half.

Duanesburg continued to play lock down defense in the second half on their way to a 47-34 win, and a Class C championship. The Eagles never gave up more than 10 points in a quarter, and forced 13 turnovers in the game.

“This was our rubber match,” said Duanesburg head coach Chris Herron. “They got us last year and that certainly mattered to this group. They wanted to come out and make a statement, and I think they did.”

Allison O’Hanlon was named Tournament MVP, and scored 12 points in the game. This is not only her third straight championship, it’s the one that means the most. “I just said this to coach Herron, this is kind of my favorite,” said O’Hanlon. “Obviously the other two were awesome, but just kind of the narratives that we’re not as good as we used to be, that hits. As a basketball player, that hits. They were great, hats off to Greenwich, they’ve had a great year but for me, this one was just a little bit personal.”

Duanesburg will take on Heuvelton out of Section X in a sub-regional matchup Tuesday at 5:00 PM at SUNY Potsdam.
