SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. ( NEWS10 ) – Saratoga Springs proposes a crackdown on property owners who lease on a short-term basis. On Monday, those opposed to the regulations held a press conference and said their rentals are often used by people priced out of hotels.

The Saratoga Springs Rental Rights Alliance has called for the city to reconsider its stance on short-term rentals. Members of the nonpartisan group said they’re concerned about many of the proposed changes, including a $1,000 application fee.

“We would like to ask where is this money going?” said Sean Connors, who is part of the alliance. He said he and his wife count on the supplemental income.

“We currently own a short-term rental on the east side. We’ve owned this for 6 years. We’ve had over 1,000 stays and 5 star reviews. This is our pride and joy and our short-term rental is like a small business,” said Connors.

The alliance is asking for an economic impact study, an examination of the costs, an establishment of a working group to review proposed regulations, a reconsideration of the $1,000 fee and a reconsideration of the owner-occupied requirement.

Anna Smith is also a member of the alliance and she believes the city is acting hastily.

“While we acknowledge the need for regulations, we urge the city to slow down and thoroughly consider the potential impact on our economic climate and residents,” said Smith.

Supporters of the measure said it would improve safety and help keep housing costs down.

The city council plans to hold more public discussions before any decisions are made. It’s not yet clear when the city council will vote on the regulations.
