TROY, NY ( NEWS10 ) — Duanesburg girls basketball suffered a heartbreaker in the Class C state championship game against Moravia Friday night. The Eagles, three-time defending Section II champs, aimed to win their first state title in program history, but some late shooting from the Blue Devils proved to be the difference in a 46-45 final.

Jessalyn Jones caught fire from behind the arc in the fourth quarter and put the Blue Devils up 45-42. Jones finished with 12 points.

Both defense’s held the opposing offense to single digits in the second quarter, but it was the Eagles that held a 21-19 edge at halftime. Coming out the break, Moravia’s offense found some momentum but Duanesburg hit some timely shots to give themselves a 33-32 lead at the end of the quarter.

Hitting some of those shots was senior Allison O’Hanlon, who scored 21 points after three quarters and finished with 24. Despite her efforts, the Blue Devils offense outscored the Eagles in the fourth quarter 14-12.

Even though the result was not a win for Duanesburg, head coach Chris Herron believes his team accomplished many things that go beyond the court.

“It’s hard right now, but eventually we’ll have time to look and reflect on everything that these girls have accomplished and just extremely proud of them,” Herron said. “What they’ve been able to accomplish for a small town in pretty incredible.”
