MOREAU, N.Y. ( NEWS10 ) — The Moreau Town Board passed a proposed moratorium Monday on commercial development. Local Law 3 passed unanimously.

The law postpones permits for industrial operations within the town’s manufacturing or industrial zones. It includes the disposal of waste materials not from Moreau or starting any businesses that conduct that kind of work.

The moratorium will continue for nine months after the law is filed with the New York Department of State.

It comes after plans to build a carbon fertilizer plant in Moreau Industrial Park were tentatively approved. Environmental advocates had raised concerns about chemicals being released from the plant. Developers said the harmful material is removed first.

Town leaders said the moratorium and the fertilizer plant proposal are not directly related.
