LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. ( NEWS10 ) — After spending three seasons as the top assistant for the Siena women’s basketball team, Terry Primm was introduced as the 10th head coach in program history Monday afternoon. He said the decision feels like a weight lifted off his shoulders.

“So I was confident that it would work out, one way or the other,” said Primm. “So, when it was announced I was relieved because this has been the best place that I’ve coached so far, been the best people that I’ve been around.”

Former head coach Jim Jabir announced his retirement in March. Based on conversations between him and Primm, it was almost a no-brainer for him to be a leading candidate.

“We’ve consistently talked about when the time came, whenever it was going to come, and maybe over the last couple of years that timeline seemed to be a little bit more insight, but it’s never done until it’s done and so the day that he announced it, it was still a shock,” said Primm.

What’s not shocking is Primm’s connection with players. Numerous names on the roster vouched for Primm to receive the nod and believe he was the right man for the job.

“Just knowing that he like solidified the job was very relieving,” said junior forward Anajah Brown. “He’s the type of coach that you would run through a wall for so, to say a speech for a minute is nothing.”

Sophomore guard Teresa Seppala believes Primm has the team’s best interest at heart and has benefited from his coaching since she’s been with the Saints.

“None of us would like to play for any other person than him,” Seppala said. “It was important for us that he stays here, and he becomes the coach because we all wanted to play for him.”

The Saints are coming off back-to-back MAAC semifinal appearances and are coming off a season where they won the most league games since the 2002-03 season. Prim said he plans to keep the programs growth consistent.

“We’re going to continue to commit to growth personally and professionally. I’m working with the best athletic administration that I know of and so I know that they’re committed to build our program everywhere that they can.”

Overall, Primm and the Saints want to keep winning.

“We’re going to play very fast,” Primm said. “We’ll definitely maintain our goal of scoring in seven seconds or less. We’ll be very balanced, we’re going to put five players on the floor that can all pass, dribble, and shoot and we want them to put special emphasis on their ability to make plays for each other.”
