ALBANY, N.Y. ( NEWS10 ) — The UAlbany women’s lacrosse team clinched a spot in the 2024 America East Tournament and sent off the eight members of its 2024 senior class with a 10-7 victory over UMass Lowell Saturday afternoon.

    Key Stats

Head Coach Katie Thomson : “We’re so proud of this senior class for being a constant throughout their four years and for their loyalty and dedication to the program.  This was our first recruiting class as a coaching staff, and we’re so grateful for their heart, their passion, their work ethic, their connection, and their togetherness.”

    How it Happened

    • The University at Albany women’s lacrosse team hosted its penultimate home game of the 2024 regular season, welcoming 11-win UMass Lowell to John Fallon Field.  Saturday was the Great Danes’ senior day, during which they paid special recognition to the eight members of the roster’s 2024 senior class.
    • The River Hawks boasted the top overall record in the America East at 11-4, and were the only team in the conference with 10 or more victories on the season.  Two of UMass Lowell’s losses, however, had come at the hands of league opponents.
    • After collecting the opening draw, Megan Dineen ripped through the River Hawks’ defense to score the first goal of the game in just 15 seconds.  UMass Lowell responded quickly, scoring back-to-back goals just 26 seconds apart to take a 2-1 lead.
    • Dineen scored again with 11:50 on the clock, only to see the River Hawks convert once again two minutes later.  In the first 4:59 of game time, both teams had combined to score five goals.
    • The torrid scoring pace let up over the remainder of the first quarter, and after a combined drought of more than four minutes, Allie Maloney and Bryar Hogg gave UAlbany the lead, 4-3, with two goals 28 seconds apart.  UMass Lowell closed the first quarter with one final goal with 1:48 on the clock, and the second quarter started in a 4-4 deadlock.
    • UAlbany and UMass Lowell each scored just once in the second quarter, bringing the halftime score to 5-5.  Neither team scored in the second until the River Hawks broke through with 6:26 on the clock.
    • Ava Poupard’s goal to tie the game at five late in the second quarter kicked off a four-goal run for the Great Danes lasting until Paisley Cook’s capstone goal with 6:05 left in the third, providing UAlbany a three-goal advantage.  UMass Lowell scored with 3:48 remaining in the quarter, their first goal in 17:38 of game time.
    • Kloey Roos scored with 1:47 on the clock to give UAlbany a three-goal lead that the team would take into the fourth quarter.  UMass Lowell scored with 10:33 remaining in the game, but never found the back of the net again.  With 5:27 on the clock, Hogg scored one final goal for good measure, giving UAlbany a 10-7 victory.
    • UAlbany controlled possession on the draw on Saturday, winning 16 of 21 attempts, 10 of which came from Haley Phalines .  The Great Danes also outshot UMass Lowell 31-22, including 10-3 in the third quarter.  The win clinches UAlbany a spot in the America East playoffs for the 17th-straight season.
