ROTTERDAM, N.Y. ( NEWS10 ) — The New York State Department of Transportation announced that signal improvements at the intersections of Curry Road at Altamont Avenue and Helderberg Avenue in Rotterdam will decrease wait times at all approaches. Upgrades were made to pedestrian crossings, signal patterns, and traffic patterns.

According to the DOT, both Helderberg Avenue approaches now run concurrently to align with typical traffic signals. Left-turning cars traveling southbound must now yield to opposing cars and the outside southbound shared left lane is reconfigured to be only one lane.

Pavement markings were modified and signs were added to reinforce this lane change. Message signs have also been put up on Helderberg Avenue to notify drivers of the new traffic pattern.

Car safety enhancements include high-visibility reflective back plates on the intersection signals and yellow flashing left turn arrows on the westbound Curry Road approaches. Accessible pedestrian signals providing voice alerts and audible tones for sight-impaired people were added as pedestrian safety enhancements.

There should be a "right turn only on green arrow" in place at the "southern" intersection of Helderberg and Curry. That is just a huge accident waiting to happen, when you have people at the "northern" intersection limited to making the left turn from the left lane only. Many people making that turn want to go south on Curry Road or even into Gabriels, forcing them to make a quick jag over to the right lane, or just completely turning into it. People coming from the opposite direction, turning right onto Curry should be limited to making that turn on a green arrow. Otherwise BAM!
