School districts, local governments, and educational institutions were awarded funding for projects like managing paper records and converting microfilms and historical documents into electronic copies. The New York State Archives is a division of the State Education Department’s Cultural Education, helping counties and schools back up vital archives like maps, deeds, mortgages, cemetery records, and more through its Local Government Records Management Improvement Fund.

Board of Regents Chancellor Lester W. Young, Jr. said the Local Government Records Management Improvement Fund is designed to make sure historical paper documents are preserved and accessible for future generations. “These grants will significantly enhance the capacity of local governments and educational institutions to manage records more effectively, ultimately making a lasting impact on our communities and our state,” Young said.
