The contagious virus causes mild, cold-like symptoms but can be serious in infants and older adults. In adults, it can cause pneumonia, infections and can cause lung disease.

“RSV, one of the common illnesses we might get each fall and winter, for some will cause mild cold-like symptoms, yet can be serious, particularly in older adults and infants,” State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald said. “My updated standing order reflects the latest recommendations from the CDC, a one-time dose is recommended for anyone age 75 and older, as well as people 60-75 with underlying medical conditions. People who are pregnant are eligible as well.”

According to the DOH, all adults around 75 are at a greater risk for serious complications from RSV. Infants under six months are protected against the virus if a person, when pregnant, receives the vaccine during 32 through 36 weeks of pregnancy.

To protect against respiratory viruses, the DOH recommends specific precautions for all ages.

    Those include:

    • Staying up to date on all vaccines, including the RSV vaccine.
    • Washing hands often with soap and hot water for at least 20 seconds.
    • Not coughing or sneezing into hands.
    • Staying home when sick or symptomatic.

Those interested in receiving the RSV vaccine , can visit a participating pharmacy without a prescription from a doctor. According to the order, all pharmacies licensed in New York State are authorized to administer the vaccine.
