Poughkeepsie man pleads guilty to gun possession

KINGSTON, N.Y. ( NEWS10 )– A Poughkeepsie man pleaded guilty to a weapon charge on Wednesday. Shaquez Nesbitt, 24, faces seven and a half years in prison.

On Feb. 5, Nesbitt was in a verbal dispute with his partner, according to police. During the interaction, he began threatening to shoot the home while the woman and her child were inside.

Once police arrived at the home, officers conducted interviews with Nesbitt and the woman. Later they recovered a loaded handgun in a maintenance room near the home.

At the time of his arrest, Nesbitt was charged with three felonies. He pleaded guilty to the Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the second degree, a violent class C felony.

“This case highlights the multiple threats presented by domestic violence and illegal gun possession, which increase the volatility and impulsivity of any situation, presenting a real danger to the lives of victims, responding police officers, the perpetrator, and unsuspecting members of our community,” Ulster County District Attorney Emmanuel Nneji said. “It inevitably leads to regrets after the harm is done. Additionally, who knows what might have been had the police officers not found the gun? There are so many ways this could have ended in tragedy: including a child finding the gun and playing with it, or someone else finding and using it.”

Nesbitt is scheduled to be sentenced on Nov. 13. In addition to seven and a half years in prison, Nesbitt faces five years of post-release supervision.
