Washington Co. documents first EEE virus case in horse

FORT EDWARD, N.Y. ( NEWS10 )– Washington County is urging residents to protect themselves from mosquito bites after a horse tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE). The Washington County Department of Public Health said there are no human cases currently, but the risk of exposure remains.

The virus spreads to people through bites from infected mosquitos and can’t be transmitted from horse to person. Although there’s no vaccine for people, residents are encouraged to vaccinate their horses annually due to their sensitivity to the virus.

Residents should take precautions when going outdoors for an extended period, such as wearing long pants, socks, and long-sleeved shirts and using mosquito repellant. Replacing and repairing window or door screens and draining standing water are also encouraged.

The county has not begun spraying for mosquitos but is monitoring the circumstances with the New York State Department of Health. Residents can find more information about the EEE virus online through the state Department of Health website.
