ALBANY, N.Y. ( NEWS10 ) — Alice Green was a civil rights icon and Friday the community came out to a candlelight vigil that was held to celebrate her legacy.  After a lifetime of service, Alice Green passed away Tuesday at the age of 84. She was a shining light for those seeking justice. People gathered to reflect, remember and honor her.

“Things were still churning. There is no stopping her at 84. She’s going to live on for sure,” said Ta-Sean Murdock, Director of Operations at the Center for Law and Justice, Inc.

Green spent her life fighting for equality in the justice system and civil rights. “I can’t stand the thought of putting people behind bars. There’s something wrong with that and I can’t rest when I see we are still doing something that doesn’t make sense, to me. It’s not effective and enslaves people,” said Green.

A native to South Carolina, she moved to the Adirondacks as a young girl. “My family was one of only two black families in the whole town. So, it was always sorta like us and them,” reflected Green.

Alice went on to college and earned several degrees.  “I was able to get three master’s degrees and a doctorate in 1982, [198] 3,” stated Dr. Green.

In July of 1984 Albany police shot and killed a mentally challenged man named Jessie Davis. The police said he attacked them.  Yet, a photo would tell the truth of the matter. “Which showed Jessie not holding a knife and a fork, but a key and a toy truck,” said Green.

In 1985 she founded the Center for Law and Justice.  And that is where hundreds of people came out to walk for Dr. Alice Green.

The groups then walked from the center and ended at the Alice Moore Black Arts and Cultural Center.
