HUDSON, N.Y. ( NEWS10 )– The algae bloom at Oakdale Lake has subsided and the water is now safe for activities. After being closed since last month, the lake has reopened for fishing and wading, according to the Hudson Youth Center.

The Youth Center received a report from the Columbia County Department of Health showing that the algae levels have lessened, making it safe for use again. However, due to an expired beach permit, swimming is unable to resume, and the beach is closed for the season.

In August, Oakdale Lake closed all water activities due to a harmful algal bloom covering the surface of the water. The blue-green algae, called cyanobacteria can cause illness to both humans and animals.

At the time of closure, a public service announcement was issued stating that direct contact, inhalation or ingestion of the polluted water can result in irritated skin, allergic reactions and even gastrointestinal issues.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, HABs commonly appear during the summer and early fall because of heat and heavy rainfall. Hudson Officials said, the rainfall, heat and fertilizer run-off from lawns nearby, caused the bloom.

While the lake is determined to be safe for use, Great Ecology and Friends of Oakdale Lake will continue to monitor the water during the off season. The Columbia County Department of Health, the Hudson Youth Center and the Friends of Oakdale Lake organization are creating a plan for how to avoid these blooms in the future.
