GREENE COUNTY, N.Y. ( NEWS10 )– Each week the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) releases the “Forest Rangers Week in Review.” For the week of Sept. 14 to 22, Forest Rangers in Greene County rescued two people in both the Elm Ridge Wild Forest in Windham and at Kaaterskill Falls in Haines Falls.

According to the DEC, Forest Rangers respond to search and rescue incidents statewide. To contact a Forest Ranger for information about a specific location, the DEC website has phone numbers for every Ranger listed by region.

On Sept. 17, around 12:15 p.m., Greene County received a call from an injured mountain biker. Forest Ranger Katherine Fox responded to the biker alongside Greene County EMS.

When Fox arrived the biker’s location, he was found with a large cut to his arm. Fox controlled the bleeding and helped the 68-year-old walk out of the woods to a waiting ambulance. Resources for the call were clear at 2:30 p.m.

DEC: 2 same-day rescues at Kaaterskill Falls

Four days later, on Sept. 21, Rangers responded to another call at Kaaterskill Falls. When Rangers John Gullen and Seamus Peterson arrived, they found a hiker with a knee injury.

Rangers then helped wrap the 47-year-old’s knee and assisted her back to the trailhead where Hunter Ambulance was waiting. Resources were clear from the scene at 8:20 p.m.

If a person needs a Forest Ranger, whether it’s for a search and rescue, to report a wildfire or to report illegal activity on state lands and easements, they should call 833-NYS-RANGERS. If a person needs urgent assistance, they can call 911.

I grew up in the Catskill park and my parents would let me go hiking by myself all the time. I'm just amazed I never got lost or hurt. Thank you to these rangers for helping those who do. 🙏
