The building, located on Rensselaer Street, is now entirely electric. Families who previously lived there had to be temporarily moved out during renovations, but officials said the upgrades are worth it.

“New home, state of the art, hopefully, a welcoming and comforting environment so that they can have the stabilization necessary so they can be successful,” Albany Housing Authority Exec. Dir. Chiquita D’Arbeau said.

Construction started last January. The project preserves 51 existing apartments and adds 37 new apartments. Upgrades include new cabinets, air conditioning and more.

Almost $500,000 per unit at taxpayer expense. One could buy a pretty nice house around here for half a million.
