COOPERSTOWN, NY ( NEWS10 ) — People aren’t the only ones affected by Hurricane Helene, so are pets.  The Susquehanna SPCA in Cooperstown is helping dogs and is gearing up to help more animals from Hurricane Milton as well.

Meet Tony. “He’s really good, he’s 7, his teeth look great,” said a vet examining the dog.

He’s a new resident here at Susquehanna. The 53-pound boxer was moved from a shelter in Tennessee that needed to make room for animals displaced by Hurricane Helene.

“We’re taking shelter dogs or cats and then that frees up the local shelters so they can hopefully still reunite people with their pets,” said Stacie Haynes, Executive Director of the Susquehanna SPCA.

As Haynes showed NEWS10, Tony is one of five dogs brought here because of Helene. All of those furry friends are seeking a forever home.

“We’re confident that the five dogs that they sent us will move pretty quickly. They are pretty sweet they’re very friendly and very adoptable” Haynes explained.

Haynes says even if you can’t provide a  forever home you can still help.

“We can’t do any of the work that we do, you know helping without you know folks who are willing to open up their hearts and be able to help us foster adapt even you know come in and visit and socialize and even help them become more adoptable” Haynes implored.

The executive director says giving those dogs a family will help free up space for the future animals sure to be impacted by Hurricane Milton.

“Right now has never been a better time to foster to adopt because the more animals we can clear out of the shelters here the more we can help the folks in the south who need us” Haynes continued.

Tony’s face was wrought with sadness but you can help make him and other dogs at the Susquehanna SPCA a lot happier by adopting them.
