According to Schenectady Fire Chief Donald Mareno, when the fire crews arrived there was a heavy fire in the building, so crews immediately went to work and were searching for people inside the apartment. Chief Mareno says one person was found inside, taken to a local hospital, and from there is being taken to Westchester Medical Center.

“We got a report at 1331 Lower Broadway of a structure fire,” Chief Mareno said. “We were told immediately that there may be people still in the building.”

NEWS10 crews saw a person taken from inside the building and saw CPR being performed on the scene. Neighbors told NEWS10 that the building is a two-story apartment complex.

Chief Mareno reported that the Fire Investigation Unit is leading the investigation into the fire and that there is smoke, water, and fire damage, but the sustainability of the building is unknown at this time. The fire has since been put out.

Fire officials said that they are unsure if the building is a total loss.

“Codes will come eventually, and they will assess the building to see if it’s sustainable or not,” Chief Mareno said.
