    New Scotland man pleads not guilty to contracting scam

    ALBANY, N.Y. ( NEWS10 ) — According to the Albany County District Attorney’s Office (DA), a New Scotland man pleaded not guilty to a contracting scam. John Weigel, 53, was charged with three counts of grand larceny and one count of scheme to defraud.

    The indictment alleges that between September 2021 and February 2023 and in November 2020 Weigel stole property worth more than $3,000 from two separate victims in Guilderland. Weigel also allegedly stole property from a victim in Colonie worth more than $3,000 between February 2021 and July 2022.

    The defendant is also accused of being a part of an ongoing scheme to defraud more people by failing to complete work for multiple clients after being paid upfront for the projects. He also allegedly did not pay subcontractors who did the work for him.

    After arraignment, Weigel was released with probation supervision. His next court date is October 29.
