DNR: manure spill at Monroe County dairy farm causes fish kill and water quality issues

    2024-05-21

NORWALK, Wis. (WKBT) -- The Wisconsin DNR is monitoring a manure spill in Monroe County.

The DNR says a spill that occurred last week at a dairy farm east of Norwalk resulted in degraded water quality and a fish kill in Moore Creek, as well as an adjacent tributary.

DNR officials believe the spill was caused by mechanical failure at the farmstead. An estimate of how much manure was spilled is not available at this time.

A fisherman in Moore Creek first notified the DNR of the spill.

The DNR and officials from Monroe County are working with the farm on ways to prevent additional runoff from entering the waterways.
